Anchored by a spacious Coles supermarket accessible directly from South Street, the centre also houses a café, bottle shop, and full basement car park. The development boasts a thoughtfully designed layout, ample parking, travellator, lift, and end-of-trip facilities, ensuring an enjoyable shopping experience.

Located on South Street in Hilton under the Fremantle Shire and bordered by residential homes and a childcare centre, the project faced significant challenges as the entire site boundary required piling and excavation to create a new 6,000m² underground basement.

Fortunately, the neighbours consented to construction and were kept informed throughout the process. The neighbouring childcare centre even facilitated significant crane lifts from their car park on weekends.

Despite the Spire & Co. teams individual construction experience, this was the company’s inaugural project and far more complex than a simple commercial warehouse on a greenfield site. The Coles Hilton Shopping Centre presented technical challenges and boundary constraints at almost every stage, including navigating Western Power’s late de-energisation of an existing substation, working near high-voltage power lines during excavation and piling, and upgrading a district sewer main running 4m beneath the site through the piled walls. Not to mention, preserving a community-cherished mature tree located right on the edge of the basement excavation line was critical. Fortunately, all these challenges were managed without incident, and the tree now blesses the centre with cherished mottled sunlight for the café diners.

The Coles Hilton Shopping Centre features a full contiguous piled basement, with a cost effective design solution to ratify the footing to pile connections and wet crop pile caps as well as a unique pile gap treatment, a testament to Spire & Co.’s commitment to innovative and sustainable construction practices. This unique design provides ample parking for customers while minimising the impact on the surrounding environment. The piling technique ensures structural stability and longevity, guaranteeing a lasting asset for the Hilton community.
